Annual drive gets started

There was music, food and pep talk Tuesday as supporters of Chilton County United Way kicked off the annual fundraising campaign.

Everyone in attendance received a foam hand with a raised index finger exclaiming “We’re No. 1!” as the campaign theme.

“Just keep in mind that we’re number one,” United Way campaign chairman Bobby Martin challenged the crowd, “and we’ve got to be number one for all these agencies.”

Martin referred to the nearly 30 agencies that rely on funding from the United Way each year to operate. Many of these agencies assist children and schools, which is regularly stressed by the organization.

This year, the group will try to raise $200,000 to match last year’s fundraising goal. The campaign runs through Dec. 31.

“It’s going to be a little harder this year,” board chairman Curtis Smith said. “We just encourage everybody to give a little more so we can still help people. That’s our main goal, to help people in Chilton County.”

Entertainment for Tuesday’s kickoff, held at the Alabama Power Conference Center, was provided by “Blast from the Past” of Chilton County High School, and Adreane Barrington.

The Rev. Matt DeBord of Clanton First Baptist also gave an encouraging word and delivered the invocation.

Several checks were presented afterward.
