Getting acquainted with Catholicism

Resurrection Catholic Church of Clanton is opening its doors to members of the community who wish to learn more about the Catholic faith.

One purpose of the weekly program called “Get Acquainted with Catholicism” is to demystify Catholic beliefs for people who otherwise have little more to go by than rumors.

The free program begins Tuesday night, Aug. 18 at 7 and will continue on a weekly basis.

“It’s an invite for people to understand the Catholic faith a little more,” said Father Bruce Bumbarger, “and to dispel some of the negative rumors that people think we believe but really don’t.”

The event is twofold — it is an educational opportunity, and it is also open to those who may want to become Catholic.

“It will become a formal process for them,” Bumbarger said, adding, “There is no obligation. People can come and go.”

The program is held annually over several weeks at the church located on First Avenue. Father Bruce, as he is known, first came to the church in mid-July of 2008. He said a good number of people attended last year.

There are no fees associated with the program.

“People can come, listen, and ask questions,” he said. “It’s not to degrade in any way other people’s faith. It’s simply a presentation of what we believe and why we believe.”

Different topics are covered each week, such as the Blessed Mother, afterlife, order of worship, and reasons for worship, to name a few.

The program is open to anyone who wishes to participate.
