It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to call Chilton County Tax Assessor Tom Powers a renaissance man. His interests are many, and his projects numerous.

Every Christmas, Powers goes into his workshop and makes a piece of furniture for his two married sons and his wife, Renee. One of his favorite pieces is a cedar porch swing he made for Renee.

Powers is also into building cars. Last year, he built a replica of a 1965 Cobra and sold it in the world famous Barrett-Jackson auction in Arizona.

“I don’t really have hobbies. I have projects,” Powers says.

His largest project on the horizon is the Greek revival home he is designing for his family.

Powers also enjoys riding his Harley Davidson, operating his Bobcat, playing golf and duck hunting.

Powers’ late father, Bob, taught him the technique of how to create stained glass, such as that found in church windows or Tiffany-style lamps. Powers eventually plans to build a workshop to continue this family art.

As tax assessor, he said the number one issue is finding new revenue sources. In October, he will give up his post to newly elected Tax Assessor Rex Cleckler.

“I will continue to have a part in the community despite my loss,” Powers said.
