The Verbena Red Devils (1-1) found themselves in the hole quickly Friday night as the Wadley Bulldogs (2-0) racked up 27 points in the first quarter.

Verbena got on board in the fourth quarter when Brad Boswell found Marshall McGaskin in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown pass, but it was too little too late as the Devils lost 44-6.

“We can’t move the ball if we don’t execute,” Verbena coach Mike Harris said. “Our quarterback almost played flawless, but we didn’t catch the ball or tackle well. They whipped us in every phase of the game.”

McGaskin had 11 carries for 94 yards, and Boswell completed 11 of 24 passes for a total 95 yards.

Michael Dennis led the Devils in tackles with at least seven, and three assists.

For the Bulldogs, Timothy Marable scored the first touchdown on a 28-yard run and seconds later returned a Verbena fumble 70 yards for another score.

Also in the first quarter, Calvin Johnson returned a punt 56 yards for a touchdown, and Trey Fetner threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Martevan McKissic.

The turnovers continued in the second quarter as Dalton Jones’ interception set up a 25-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Grady Sims.

Skylar Humphries kicked a field goal, making the score 37-0.

With five minutes remaining in the third, Fetner found Jeremiah Thomas from 10 yards out for Wadley’s final points of the night.

Marable had 110 total yards rushing.
