For the past 35 years, Chilton County has embraced Special Olympics and the tradition continued on April 29 at Clanton City Park.

Event Coordinator Michelle Coppedge has had a first-hand look at the event over the years.

She was first introduced as a volunteer while in middle school, witnessed the event as a teacher and is now in an organizational role.

“It has been fun to see it continue to grow through the years,” Coppedge said. “It’s like no other event.”

Julie Hunter and her son Talon have been a part of Special Olympics for six years.

“We look forward to it every year,” Hunter said. “The inclusion is great for our kids, and it shows that their disabilities do not define who they are.”

For Kristi Fanning, it is the first year that her son Hayden has been a participant in the event.

“I was surprised at how big it was,” Kristi Fanning said. “It’s definitely a huge deal.”

A total of seven events were held that included girls and boys softball throw, soccer kick, track and long jump.

“It’s a celebration of their unique gifts,” Coppedge said.

Several Chilton County High School students volunteered in various roles, such as guides, monitoring bouncy houses or providing face painting and snacks to the children.

Each of the 11 Chilton County public schools was represented with athletes in the games.

Everyone who was involved with the event was a winner, from the athletes to the volunteers.

Chilton County Superintendent Tommy Glasscock officially signaled the opening of the games as balloons were released into the sky.

“Today is your day, and don’t let anyone take it away from you,” Glasscock said.
