Schools holding orientations as first day back nears

A long, hot (and fun, we hope) summer is nearing an end for local students, teachers and administrators.

The first day of the 2015-16 school year for Chilton County public schools is Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Leading up to the first day, an employees “in-service” will be held Aug. 5, a system professional development day will be Aug. 6, an employee workday is scheduled for Aug. 7 and another system professional development day is Aug. 10.

Once school starts back, the first break will be Labor Day, on Sept. 7.

Schools will be closed for Columbus Day/weather day on Oct. 12.

Oct. 13 will be a student holiday, while employees will have a workday for half the day and professional development for the other half.

Veteran’s Day is Nov. 11, and schools will be out for a full week (Nov. 23-27) for Thanksgiving.

The first term ends for students at 1 p.m. on Dec. 18 and for employees at 3 p.m. the same day.

After the holidays, schools will re-open on Jan. 4, 2016, for employees and Jan. 5, 2016, for students.

Private school Chilton Christian Academy will re-open on Aug. 12.

Information about orientation sessions at local public schools is below.

School officials who wish to have their orientation information published in the newspaper are welcome to email the information to news@clantonadvertiser.com.

•Chilton County High School will hold orientation on Aug. 6.

Juniors and seniors are asked to attend from 4-5 p.m., and freshmen and sophomores are asked to attend from 5-6 p.m.

Students and parents should report to the lobby of the auditorium to pick up schedules first. Any student with unpaid fees from the previous school year must pay the fees in the front office before receiving a schedule. Once the fees are paid, students will receive their schedule from the office.

After students receives schedules, they will visit the lunchroom to do the following: purchase planners ($5), purchase lockers ($10), purchase parking decals ($25), purchase CCHS school T-shirts ($10), pay the school technology fee ($10), receive information and paperwork on free and reduced lunches, place money on student accounts, discuss and fill out information for health conditions with the school nurse, and learn about and make donations to the CCHS Capital Campaign.

Yearbooks will also be sold the night of orientation. Yearbooks may be purchased at Ms. Wilson’s Room (Room 11 at the front hall). Yearbooks are $65, and senior yearbook ads are $225 for a full-page and $115 for a half-page.

•Clanton Intermediate School will hold orientation and pre-registration from 1 until 2:30 p.m. Aug. 6 for third grade. The orientation will begin promptly at 1 p.m. in the cafeteria at the school.

The same schedule will be followed on Aug. 7 for fourth grade and on Aug. 10 for fifth grade

•Orientation for Thorsby School grades kindergarten through 12 will be held at 5 p.m. Aug. 10.

All parents and students attending should report to the school’s auditorium.

•Clanton Elementary School orientation will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Aug. 3 for pre-kindergarten, from 4:30 to 5:30 Aug. 5 for kindergarten, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Aug. 6 for first grade and from 6-7 p.m. Aug. 6 for second grade.

Class lists will be posted on the front door of the school on Aug. 3.

•Jemison Middle School will hold registration on July 30. Registration for seventh grade will be from 10 a.m. to noon, sixth grade from 1-3 p.m. and fifth grade from 4-6 p.m.

Spirit shirts will be on sale during registration. These shirts can be worn any day of the week with uniform pants.

•Verbena orientation will be held Aug. 6-7. Orientation for the Verbena Annex will be held Aug. 6 (kindergarten from 5-6 p.m., and first and second grades from 6-7 p.m.).

The orientation will begin in the multi-purpose room, where information about the new year will be discussed. Parents are asked to leave supplies in your vehicle until this meeting has adjourned. Afterward, parents may visit their child’s classrooms to deliver their supplies.

Orientation for the high school campus will be held from noon to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 7.

In the cafeteria, students will be able to purchase parking permits for $15 (a copy of the driver’s insurance coverage is required and will be kept in the office) and lockers for $10. Lunchroom money can be prepaid.

Homeroom/first block classes are posted in the hallway. Homeroom/first block teachers will have schedules.

Any students having unpaid fees left from the previous school year must be paid before new schedules can be picked up. Any students owing such fees should pay them in the main campus office. The student will receive a receipt to give to your first block teacher in order to obtain your schedule.

•Chilton Christian Academy parent orientation for students in kindergarten through sixth grade will begin at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 11. Orientation for high school students will begin at 7:30 p.m. the same day.
