Clanton’s City Council on Monday discussed repairing a leaky roof at the Chilton County YMCA.

The YMCA building in Clanton is owned by the city.

Mayor Billy Joe Driver told the council that the metal roof at the facility was leaking and that he had received two quotes for work to repair the roof.

Councilman Sammy Wilson said he would meet with a representative of another roofing company this week and would report back to the mayor and council about any quote he received.

In other business, the council:

•Passed a resolution stating that the city would be interested in obtaining the bell from the USS Chilton, a warship that is no longer in commission. Billy Singleton with the Chilton County Airport Authority said he had been in contact with a West Virginia resident who would be willing to give the bell to Chilton County. “That’s the only thing left (of the ship), and it’s been sitting in a garage in West Virginia for 37 years,” Singleton said. Singleton asked the council for the resolution as proof of local interest in the artifact.

•Approved Driver’s recommendation to list several city-owned vehicles as surplus, so they could be sold at an upcoming auction.

•Approved the termination of a city employee who failed an alcohol test while on duty. The employee had been suspended without pay until the council made a decision.

•Approved the hires of four part-time workers in the police department.

•Approved the hires of Parker White and Austin Pickett in the parks department.

•Approved granting a retail liquor license to Bernard’s House of Blues.

•Approved to request bids for four police department vehicles.

•Approved for the police department to purchase TASERs with money from the Corrections Fund.

•Gave Driver permission to enter into an agreement with the state for maintenance of rights-of-way along state highways that are inside city limits. The city has traditionally maintained these areas, but the state requires an agreement to be in place for liability purposes, Driver said.

•Was updated on the status of work to re-open the E.M. Henry Head Start Center, which was closed because of fire code violations. Driver said a new sprinkler system should be installed by next week.
