Authorities are continuing an investigation Tuesday after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a train late Monday night in Verbena.

Chilton County Sheriff Kevin Davis said a 43-year-old male from Chilton County was struck and killed near the intersection of U.S. Highway 31 and County Road 503 in Verbena around 10 p.m. on Monday.

Davis said the initial call received by his department came from a representative of CSX Railroad reporting the train had struck a pedestrian who was on the tracks.

After a preliminary investigation using video surveillance obtained from a camera located near the front portion of the train, evidence collected at the scene of the incident and eyewitness reports, Davis said the investigation is being treated as a suicide.

Although it is unclear how fast the train was traveling at the time of the incident, Davis said there was no written report of a vehicle being near the scene of the incident.

“I know there was no vehicle struck,” Davis said.

Based on emergency dispatch reports, members of the sheriff’s department, Verbena Volunteer Fire Department, CARE Ambulance, Jemison Police Department, Chilton County EMA and the Chilton County Coroner responded to the scene.

Authorities worked the scene for several hours until early Tuesday morning.

Davis said his department is continuing to look into the incident.
