The Chilton County Board of Education heard a report from Chilton County Schools Superintendent Dave Hayden during a regular meeting Tuesday regarding efforts to clean Chilton County High School’s gymnasium floor.

About two weeks ago, students allegedly entered the gym after regular school hours and sprayed the contents of a fire extinguisher onto the floor.

Fire extinguishers contain pressurized chemicals used to control fires that could damage surfaces they come in contact with, such as the CCHS gym floor.

An incident report was filed with the Clanton Police Department, and at the time, Hayden said criminal charges or a civil lawsuit could follow.

He also said he was contacting companies that provide cleaning services for chemicals such as those in fire extinguishers to find out how much cleaning would cost.

On Tuesday, Hayden told the board that parents of students allegedly involved in the incident agreed to pay, and paid, $4,300 to have the gym floor cleaned.

“I don’t anticipate any further action other than [CCHS Principal Cynthia] Stewart’s punishment on-site,” Hayden said. “There was a possibility of a civil lawsuit or criminal charges, but as far as I’m concerned, we can put that down.”

In other business, the board made numerous personnel decisions regarding resignations and employees in new positions.
