With Chilton County High School’s 2014 “Blast from the Past” just a week away, students took part in a dress rehearsal Friday evening to practice the songs and dances they will perform.

This year’s program will be held in the CCHS auditorium Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, March 1 at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, March 2 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $7 per person and may be purchased in the CCHS front office during school hours Feb. 24–28 for reserved seats.

Tickets will be on sale Feb. 24 from 6–8 p.m. in the CCHS auditorium.

For more information, call the CCHS office at (205) 280-2710.

Tickets may be purchased at the door before performances as long as they are available.

More than 100 students are involved in Blast from the Past, a concert program and fundraiser that supports local charities, such as Chilton County Special Olympics, and the school itself.

Proceeds from the 2014 program will benefit CCHS.

After a three-year hiatus, retired educators Rick and Sheri McKee are spearheading the program again.

The first Blast was held in the early 1990s, and the McKees led it for 18 years before handing the reigns to Paige Scruggs, who led it for three years.

“When I retired, we just didn’t think we could do it anymore,” Rick McKee said. “It’s a good show. I’m glad it’s kept going all these years.”

McKee said one reason he and his wife decided to come back to the program is he missed interacting with the students, and Blast was a good opportunity to do so even though they are retired.

“We have always enjoyed it,” McKee said. “We like the music, and we love working with the kids. I miss working with the kids. It’s just in my blood.”

In addition to the scheduled performances for the public, the program will be performed for other local schools.

Tryouts for Blast were held in December 2013, and rehearsals started in early January.

“The kids are having fun,” McKee said. “Not everybody plays sports, and it gives them an outlet.”

Songs in the 2014 program includes the following chart-topping tunes: “Cold Hearted” by Paula Abdul, “Come Fly with Me” by Frank Sinatra, “Dancing in the Street” by Martha and the Vandellas, “Fins” by Jimmy Buffett, “Got a Hold on Me” by Christine McVie, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” by Whitney Houston, “I’m Your Puppet” by James and Bobby Purify, “Jump” by The Pointer Sisters, “King of the Road” by Roger Miller, “King Tut” by Steve Martin, “LeFreak” by Chic, “Love’s Been a Little Bit Hard on Me” by Juice Newton, “Music, Music, Music” by Teresa Brewer, “My Love” by Petula Clark, “The Night Chicago Died” by Paper Lace, “One Way or Another” by Blondie, “Signs” by Five Man Electrical Band, “Somebody to Love” by Jefferson Airplane, “Standing on the Corner” by The Four Lads, “Sweet Love” by Anita Baker, “Tears on My Pillow” by Little Anthony & the Imperials, “Venus” by Shocking Blue, “We Got the Beat” by The Go-Go’s and “You Make Loving Fun” by Fleetwood Mac.
