A Maplesville win over Sweet Water was a long time coming—and for a few gut-wrenching moments on Friday, it looked like the Red Devils would have to wait even longer for a win over their nemesis.

The Devils pulled out a 27-24 win to break a streak of four consecutive losses to Sweet Water.

The Devils made it look easy for most of the game, leading 21-0 (on scoring receptions by Anthony Moore and Stevonta Bradley, and a run by Colby Chambers) at halftime and 21-6 midway through the fourth quarter.

But Sweet Water struck for three touchdowns in about 6 minutes to take the lead.

Maplesville’s offense had been stymied for much of the fourth quarter, but needing a touchdown to take the lead, quarterback Chambers completed three consecutive passes to set up Damian Mitchell for a scoring run.

“They never quit,” MHS coach Brent Hubbert said. “They showed a lot of heart; they showed a lot of guts.”

Mitchell rushed 19 times for 180 yards, while Moore caught six passes for 71 yards.
