Verbena wins first area baseball game

Verbena on Thursday played and won its first area game of the season, 7-6 over Wadley.

VHS scored three runs in the top of first inning and never trailed.

Jacob Montgomery started on the mound and kept Wadley’s bats at bay, and Chris Cook took over in the fifth inning and allowed no runs the rest of the way.

Montgomery struck out six batters. Cook struck out four in three innings of work and walked none.

Jesse Ellis was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.

Montgomery had a double, two runs scored and one RBI; and Cole Mims was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
