Authorities continue investigation of shooting involving a minor

Authorities are continuing an investigation of a shooting that occurred on Feb. 14 on County Road 41 shortly after 4:30 p.m.

Chilton County Sheriff Kevin Davis said sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call of a disturbance involving a 17-year-old male who was threatening his family members including grandparents.

Once deputies arrived on the scene and were pulling into the driveway, the grandfather of the 17-year-old fired one round, striking the juvenile in the abdomen area.

“Deputies had control of the scene and started rendering medical care to the victim,” Davis said. “Three people were detained on the scene and the juvenile was transported by ground to the Interstate 65 Exit 212 where he was picked up by an emergency medical helicopter and taken to an area hospital.”

Davis said the victim was conscious when he was placed in the helicopter.

Davis said statements and interviews were immediately conducted and lasted into the evening hours with the three people detained but no arrests have been made.

“All we know at this point is the victim was out of control trying to fight and making threats toward the family,” Davis said. “It then escalated and we are trying to determine if the grandfather shot him out of self-defense, accidental or pre-determined.”

Due to the victim being a minor and no arrests made, Davis did not release names but said the investigation is ongoing with more interviews and statements being conducted.
