Investigators think Verbena shooting accidental

Published 4:00pm Tuesday, November 29, 2011

The Chilton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting in Verbena over the weekend as accidental.

Sheriff Kevin Davis said a 16-year-old male was shot while visiting a 15-year-old friend about 7 p.m. Saturday.

“The 15-year-old was in possession of the gun at some point in time in the bedroom area of the house,” Davis said. “The gun accidentally discharged and struck the 16-year-old in the jaw. It does appear to us to be an accidental shooting. We have no reason to believe otherwise.”

No charges have been filed, but Davis said the investigation is ongoing.

The incident happened in the 600 block of County Road 503 in Verbena.

Other relatives were home at the time of the incident, but there were no other injuries.

The victim was airlifted to a Birmingham area hospital, and Davis said the victim is still receiving treatment, to his knowledge.

CHILDREN should not be able to even hold a gun without having proper training. Proper training could have prevented this accident. Personally I believe whoever supplied this gun to this CHILD should be held accountable.

Why would a 15 yr old have a gun in his personal possession?
My heart goes out to these families, I pray this child will be alright.

I would imagine a 15 year old would have a gun in his possession for the same reasons that anyone else would. I had more than one when I was way younger than that. Of course, I was taught how to safely use them, but the age of 15 in and of itself shouldn’t be a disqualifier. 15 and 16 year old kids kill people with cars all the time and they drive all over the place, very often while texting on their cell phone. I’d be more concerned about that.
