Sixty-eight local kids marched their way through downtown Clanton on Friday to commemorate their final stand with the Chilton County Sheriff’s Department’s Junior Deputy Academy.

Participants, ages 11-15, had gone through a weeklong regimen of physical fitness tests and hands-on learning about law enforcement.

Junior Deputy Academy Class President Samantha Davis presents deputies with a gift from Academy participants.

“The kids really enjoy the march,” Sheriff Kevin Davis said. “That’s a reward for the hard work they put in all week.”

Academy graduates marched down Second Avenue to the Chilton County Courthouse, where they were recognized in a ceremony in front of family and friends.

Samantha Davis, a rising eighth grader at Clanton Middle School who was named Academy Class President, said her favorite part of the event was the K-9 exercise.

“He put on a sleeve, and the dogs got to jump out of the back of a truck and the window—they were yanking them around, it was funny,” Davis said.

Davis said she learned the three core values of the Academy: courage, self-discipline and integrity.

Sheriff Davis thanked the Academy’s sponsors: Stokes, CRH, AAA Century Bonding, Chilton County Homebuilders, E-Z Way Out Bonding, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church No. 2, Sonic, Sports Shop and Winn-Dixie.

Academy graduates were: Brittany Adams, Jesse Arthur, Clay Austin, Dylan Beam, Nathan Bland, Sam Bradley, Lauren Broussard, Dakota Clement, Dylan Connell, Heidi Connell, Jenny Creel, Elizabeth Culp, Jesse Culp, Matthew Culp, Breanna Davis, Lillian Davis, Samantha Davis, Sweet Davis, Chase Deason, Micah Douglas, Wayne Duhon, Colton Fells, Tommie Fulmer, Julie Gassaway, Timothy Greene, Cainon Griffin, Tanner Gurry, Emily Hartley, Cameron Hubbard, Forest Johnson, Josh Johnson, Krysten Jones, Sarah Jones, Gage Karschnik, Katie Kemp, Keri Jo Kemp, Kevin Kemp, Kolby Kemp, Dillan Langston, Blake Lockhart, Ahnna Grace Mayfield, Logan Mayfield, Darron Morrison, Jesse Norton, Heath Oaks, Bryant Peek, Damion Peek, Savannah Powell, Nathan Price, Carson Riley, Taran Russell, Austin Ryhal, Kacy Scarbrough, Eric Schrader, Bailey Smith, Bradly Smith, Clara Smith, Ryan Smith, Sawyer Smith, Tyler Smitherman, Tanner Staggs, Stephanie Tollett, Dakota Vessicchio, Matthew Walls, Noah Walls, Slade Williams, Autumn Whorf and Jonathan Worf.
