A head-on collision Wednesday on Highway 31 south of Clanton resulted in the drivers of both vehicles being hospitalized, and one later died.

Edward Joseph Irvin, 48, of Verbena was killed when the Jeep Cherokee he was driving collided with a 2005 Ford pick-up truck at about 1:15 p.m. near the 205.5 mile marker, about two miles south of Clanton, according to a press release from Alabama Law Enforcement Agency

The condition of the second victims was not immediately known.

Both drivers had to be extricated from the vehicles by emergency responders, Verbena Fire Department Chief Allen Goree said.

There were no passengers in the vehicles other than the drivers.

Highway 31 was closed for about an hour while responders were working at the scene.

Irvin was transported by CARE Ambulance to Shelby Medical Center in Alabaster, where he was pronounced dead, while the other victim was transported via CARE to UAB Hospital.

Clanton Fire Department Chief David Driver said the second victim was conscious after he was extricated from the pick-up truck, but his injuries were still considered serious.

Alabama State Troopers are investigating the crash.
