Corbin wins Softball Player of the Year

Hannah Rose Corbin was one of the catalysts in helping the Jemison Panthers softball team surpass 30 wins in the 2017 season, which is quite an accomplishment for any team but especially at the Class 6A level.

As a result, she was named the 2017 Chilton County Softball Player of the Year by The Clanton Advertiser.

“It’s definitely a blessing, because God has given me this talent and I’m just using it for him,” Corbin said. “It’s exciting to see that all the hard work has paid off.”

She showed consistent production both as a pitcher and at the plate, while spending time in the outfield when she was not in the circle.

She was first introduced to pitching when she was 10 years old and has been developing her game ever since.

“The game is at your pace and you control the game,” Corbin said. “I like that part of it.”

Five pitches have become part of her arsenal over the years, which include a fastball, changeup, curveball, drop and a riseball.

The riseball is the latest addition and something that she has been working on for the past year and a half.

As a pitcher you are often times thrust into a leadership role, which is something that Corbin has become more accustomed to.

“It is something I’ve had to work on, because I’m not a very loud person,” Corbin said.

Although she may not be the most vocal, her leadership by example seems to come natural.

She led the team with a record of 19-4 with a 1.4 ERA and 185 strikeouts in 127 innings pitched. An average of nearly 1.5 punchouts per inning.

“It’s not all about the strikeouts, because sometimes you have those teams [opponents] that are pitch-to-contact and you rely on your team,” Corbin said. “We had a great defense that was spot on.”

Her prowess at the plate was just as impressive, as she finished with a batting average of .551, 54 hits, 44 RBI and seven home runs.

According to Corbin, hitting is much more reactive and carries a lot less pressure than pitching.

Corbin has one year left in her high school career and looks to continue to build on the foundation that the seniors before her have established.

“We matured as a team and we definitely improved together,” Corbin said. “There is plenty of talent here to do it again.”
