Military retirees hosting luncheon

By STEVEN CALHOUN/Staff Writer

The Central Alabama Military Retirees will have a luncheon at Kountry Kitchen Oct. 12 at 11 a.m.

The group of retired military men and women meets the second Wednesday of every month to eat together and socialize. There are often guest speakers who bring relevant topics to the group.

Last month’s guest was Thomas Rayam, a former player at Alabama and now consultant for Southern Care Hospice, who spoke to the group about hospice care. According to Bonnie Frazier, he dispelled myths about hospice and brought up new benefits many of the retirees had never heard of. He then signed autographs and ate with the members.

This month’s speaker is Marie McGalliard from the Chilton County Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. The DAV Auxiliary is a group of women veterans that meets regularly as well, and Frazier hopes that members of the CAMR will consider joining the DAV too.

There are currently about 30 people on the list of active members in the CAMR, according to Frazier. She said she is happy with this number, and hopes to give all military retirees in Chilton County who want it a place to come socialize and be with like-minded people their age.

Frazier said that military is like a family within itself, and without a military base in Chilton County, the club may be the only social time with other military that some people have.

The number one goal of the club is for military retirees to get away from their normal routine, enjoy good food and socialize for a while.
