Thorsby names town attorney

The Town of Thorsby once again has a full-time attorney at its disposal following a decision by the Thorsby Town Council to give Bent Owens that title.

Owens had been in a temporary role with the town but will now be the town’s primary legal adviser moving forward.

Owens is part of the law firm Ellis, Head, Owens & Justice located in Columbiana.

Thorsby Mayor Robert Hight met with Owens and acknowledged that he liked the job that Owens had been doing and was in favor of him taking on a full-time role.

“They (Owens’s law firm) are very knowledgeable on municipality law,” Hight said.

According to Hight, the firm is also used by the City of Clanton.

Hight said Thorsby will be charged as they use Owens, which is the same format they have used with its attorney in the past.

Councilman Justin Killingsworth brought up that he would like to look into more efficient upkeep of the town’s ballfield area, including cutting the grass in the park.

The Council informed him that the town is currently two men short and have had issues keeping up with the park due to limbs from recent storms they are still picking up weeks later.

A motion was passed to have Killingsworth do some research and put together a bid package for the Council to look at next meeting.

The next Thorsby Council meeting will be Jan. 4 after the Dec. 21 meeting was canceled due to it falling on the week of Christmas.
