The Maplesville council meeting for December began with Jay Lecroy with the LeCroy Career Technical Center in Clanton, who presented the council with the 2015 football state champion sign that will be added to the signs that welcomes visitors to town.

The championship sign is carved out of wood and according to Maplesville Mayor W.C. Hayes Jr., was to be painted Tuesday.

Football head coach Brent Hubbert attended the meeting and presented the council with a framed certificate of appreciation as well as an official state champion hat to Hayes Jr.

Nancy Seales stood up and gave thanks to the police department for risking their lives in response to a car that hit a telephone pole a week ago. The acknowledgement received applause from everybody in attendance.

Yolanda Boggs of United Way presented Hayes Jr. with a $700 check to be donated toward the Toys for Kids program. She also gave a box with about 20 HUG-A-BEARS to be given out.

Maplesville Police Chief Todd Ingram turned in the resignation of part-time officer Brian Brandenberg.

Ingram then recommended Edward Freeman of the Chilton County Sherriff’s Office to fill the vacancy. The council unanimously approved Freeman to fill the part-time position.

The investigation report included an arrest that was made of a suspect from Montgomery that is believed to have had a hand in a couple of burglaries, in which televisions and guns were stolen.

Ingram stated that there had been a couple of traffic fatalities within the past two weeks. He urged citizens to be aware of their surroundings while on the roadways.

Fire Chief Michael Drewry brought to the council’s attention a 2009 rescue truck for sale located in Pennsylvania that cost $109,000. It would replace the department’s current 1992 model that has been experiencing problems such as brake trouble.

The council decided to leave a decision open until the next meetings to further assess the situation. In the mean time, the search and gathering estimates will continue.

In other news from the meeting:

•The council unanimously approved the resignation of council member Hal Harrison of District 1. Harrison’s decision was made due to moving out of town for family reasons. The vacancy will be filled at the next meeting.

•The January meeting was moved from Jan. 11 due to the possibility of Alabama playing for the college football national championship. The meeting was rescheduled for Jan. 18.

•The request was approved for an identity theft protection guide to be listed as a resource link on the town’s website at no cost to the town.

•Hayes Jr. will look further into establishing a method to track when traffic signs need to be updated. He will have more at the next meeting.

•The council approved for Timothy Reynolds to be drug tested so that he can join the Maplesville Fire Department.

•Hayes, Jr. stated that garbage pickup would remain on its regular schedule during the week of Christmas.

•The fire department was also thanked for all their help during the Christmas parade over the weekend.

•A motion was then agreed upon to approve the financial report.

•There was nothing further to add pertaining to the town’s sewer grant.
