Hornets spoil Nettles’ BHS debut

Billingsley's Jimmie Lanier and Dallas County's Landen Denny face off before a play Friday night.

The Billingsley Bears lost their season opener Friday night to the Dallas County Hornets, 36-6.

It was all Dallas County in the first half. The Hornets blocked a punt in the first quarter for a 45-yard touchdown, and Brandon Harvell and Keymiya Harrell each scored in the second.

With 1:28 left until halftime, the stadium lights on Billingsley’s side went out due to a breaker problem. After a short delay, officials allowed the game to resume until halftime.

Despite the lack of lighting, Harrell scored his touchdown and the Hornets stacked on 2 extra points, making the score 20-0 at the half.

The lights were restored temporarily but went black again in the third. On the very next play, Billingsley’s Jimmie Lanier ran 28 yards for a touchdown. After a failed conversion attempt, the score was 20-6.

It was Harvell who answered for the Hornets in the fourth, returning an interception all the way. Then Harrell capped it off with a successful conversion.

Dallas County running back Devin King followed up with a 50-yard touchdown run, and another conversion resulted in the final score.

Reggie Browder led rushing for the Bears, gaining 97 yards on 22 carries. Lanier was right behind with 96 yards on 17 carries.

Carlos Caver led in tackles with 8 total tackles and a fumble recovery. Also, A.J. Tyus had 7 tackles.
