Thorsby, Jemison consolidating mail carriers

In a move intended to cut costs, Thorsby’s mail carriers will soon begin delivering out of the Jemison post office.

Joseph Breckenridge, spokesman for the United States Postal Service, said the change should not affect delivery.

“The customers won’t even notice this change,” Breckenridge said. “And the only thing that will be different for the letter carriers is that they will show up for work at a different location.”

The Thorsby Post Office will remain open, and customer’s boxes at the office won’t be affected.

Thorsby has two mail routes—each route has a regular carrier and a substitute—and Jemison has five.

Breckenridge said managing the carriers out of one office could save $30,000 per year in management costs and by cutting in half the number of truck deliveries to the area.

“Every dollar counts,” he said. “We figure whatever we can do to save money is worth looking into.”

Breckenridge said all current employees would keep their jobs.

The spokesman said the shift, which is scheduled to take effect on March 12, is part of national survey by USPS to find adjacent offices that could consolidate carriers.
