Jeff State offering summer career-focused courses

Jefferson State Community College’s Clanton Campus will offer three career-focused courses starting this summer.

The courses are catered to those who are looking for fast-paced career readiness programs.

Jeff State will offer a clinical medical assistant prep class, a dental assistant class, and a medical billing and coding certification prep class.

“Our programs are designed to put students in the workforce in as little as 10 weeks depending on the class,” said Kathi Carr from Jeff State’s Center for Workforce Education.

The dental assistant class is completed in 11 weeks, meeting two nights per week.

The clinical medical assistant is a 26-week, national certification program and will offer opportunities to students with the under-construction St. Vincent’s Chilton hospital opening soon.

The medical billing and coding program is an 18-week program, meeting two nights a week with three national certifications.

A high-school diploma or GED is required to register for the classes.

The prices and dates for the classes are as follows:

•Clinical medical assistant prep: June 20 to Dec. 5; $1,695

•Dental assistant: June 27-Sept. 21; $1,199

•Medical billing and coding certification prep: Aug. 9 to Dec. 8; $1,395

“These classes are a great opportunity because not everyone will be going to college; we actually had a lady in her late 50s complete the clinical medical assistant prep,” Carr said. “The classes are even recognized by the US Department of Labor as hot, bright outlook jobs.”
