Speed bumps to be extended near IHS

The speed bumps in front of Isabella High School will be extended due to safety concerns.

According to County Engineer Tony Wearren, the decision was made to counter motorists that drive around the speed bumps.

In order to drive around the speed bumps, the motorists cut through the carpool lanes as well as portions of the parking lot.

What makes it a tricky situation is the school’s close proximity to the road and the location of the football field directly across the street.

“We feel like there’s a real danger,” Wearren said. “There’s constantly kids crossing there.”

Two speed bumps were initially added early on last school year. They currently take up the width of the roadway.

According to Wearren, from what he has gathered, motorists have not just started going out of their way to avoid the speed bumps since school ended. They were doing it while school was in session.

Channelizer cones were used to persuade drivers to stay in their lane, but proved ineffective.

After on-site visits and a meeting with IHS Principal Ricky Porter, extending the speed bumps was the best option on the table.

Now that a decision has been made, the extensions are planned to be added immediately.
