2018 Hunnicutt scholarships awarded

The Hunnicutt Scholarship is awarded each year during the Chilton County Basketball Tournament, and this year’s recipients include Hannah Wilson of CCHS, Karly Davis of Thorsby, as well as Isaac Graham and Kelon Mims, both of Isabella.

“It’s just a huge honor to be chosen for a scholarship that is community wide,” Wilson said.

Graham continues what has become a family tradition of sorts, as he followed in the footsteps of his sister, who was a past recipient of the scholarship.

According to Graham, he had realized for a while that the scholarship was a possibility.

Mims initially found out about the scholarship a couple of weeks ago, while Wilson had become aware of it once her name was called over the speakers of the Chilton County Gymnasium.

The annual scholarship selections are made by the Chilton County Principals and Coaches Association. In the past, the recipients have been awarded about $300 each.

The money is designated to help pay for college, as they work toward their desired degree.

Wilson will be attending Troy University, while Mims and Graham are still in the process of narrowing down schools.

Mims is leaning toward earning a degree in business.

“I want to own my own business one day,” Mims said.

Wilson is focused on rehabilitation.

According to Wilson, she wants to do occupational therapy because she has had injuries in the past and has seen first-hand the difference that career can make.

Graham is interested in the field of music production.

“I’ve always liked music and enjoy creating it,” Graham said.

Wilson, Graham and Mims each came to midcourt and were recognized during a break in the action of the county tournament semifinals. Davis was not in attendance.
