College application fees waived next week

The week of Oct. 19-23 is a special week for many high school seniors because it is free college application fee week in the state of Alabama.

During the week, colleges and universities throughout Alabama will waive the fees usually required to submit applications for consideration of entry into the college.

Chilton County Schools career coach Wendy Fortner will be at Maplesville High School during the day on Oct. 19 and Thorsby High School on Oct. 21.

She will be setup to assist any students who have questions about the application process.

“They can apply to as many as they want to,” Fortner said. “Some aren’t sure exactly where they want to go.”

The idea for the week was created by the American College Application Campaign as an effort across the nation to increase the number of first-generation college students and encourage the pursuit of higher education from low-income families.

The University of Alabama has an online application fee of $40, while Auburn University typically requires a $50 fee to apply.
