Humane society going green

Got an old cell phone, outdated computer or empty ink cartridge lying around? By giving it to the Chilton County Humane Society, you can get rid of some unwanted clutter and help animals at the same time.

The humane society is sending any used electronics or electronic parts to Tech Collectors, a company that buys and recycles the materials. The two collection sites are the shelter, located at 139 Shade Tree Drive, and Second Chances Resale Store, located at 406 Seventh St. N.

“You might say the Chilton County Humane Society is going green,” said Kailyn Hill, secretary of the humane society’s board of directors.

Kailyn Hill holds up a basket of used electronics people have already donated to the Chilton County Humane Society for an ongoing fundraiser.

The drive started last week, and many people have already taken advantage of the opportunity. Volunteers hope it will continue to be successful.

“One day, I just started asking, what do you do with old cell phones when you buy a new one?” Hill said.

Other suggested items include ink cartridges, laptops, desktop computers, digital cameras, digital video cameras and GPS devices. Hill said the parts do not have to be intact.

“Any pieces that go with any electronics we will accept,” she said. “Anything, no matter how little, benefits us.”

The fundraiser does not involve any direct buying or selling. The company pays for all shipping and handling. All donors must do is drop off their unwanted items, and the humane society will do the rest.

All proceeds go directly to the Chilton County Humane Society. For more information, call 755-9170.
