Gospel music to benefit veterans

The city of Jemison will be front and center for gospel music singing that will benefit Disabled Veterans Chapter 33.

It is the fourth year in a row that the singing event has taken place at the Jemison City Hall Auditorium and will be held August 5 beginning at 7 p.m.

However, this year’s event has expanded to include a “fun day” on August 6 at Jemison City Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We’re hoping to gain even more support and raise more money for the veterans by making it a weekend event,” said John R. Smith, a member of the gospel music group “Heavens Strings.”

The Friday-Saturday combination will be part of a Jemison Veterans Celebration Weekend that is presented by gospel music group “Heavens Strings.”

“We’ve had the singing, but got the idea of getting the city involved and making it a true community event,” Smith said.

Donations will be taken up at each day’s festivities, and all proceeds from the event will go toward helping disabled veterans in need of assistance.

“Nobody else handles the money,” Smith said.

The gospel singing on Friday will be followed by the “fun day,” which will include several local vendors, an antique car show, fair food and kids activities such as face painting.

Music will also be played on Saturday. “Heavens Strings” is scheduled to play on both days, with “God’s Deliverance,” “For His Glory” playing as well on Friday.

Holy Destiny and Canaanland will join the party as musical groups on Saturday.
