Distinguished Young Women of Chilton County interest meeting to be held

It’s that time of year again — for the Distinguished Young Women of Chilton County scholarship program, formerly known as Chilton County Junior Miss.

An informational meeting will be held Sunday, June 5 at 2:30 p.m. in the Jemison High School cooking lab.

Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a society of teachers in the county, will continue to present the competition as it has done each year.

The program awards college scholarships to young women who have distinguished themselves at school and in their communities.

“The biggest part of this is that it is a huge scholarship opportunity for girls coming into their senior year,” said Leslie Deavers, president of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Chilton County. “It’s a very easy way to obtain funds that families struggle to find.”

During the interest meeting, information such as when practices will be held, requirements and how to register online will be addressed.

The competition is scheduled to be held Saturday, July 16.

The Distinguished Young Women of Chilton County scholarship program is also the local preliminary to the Distinguished Young Women of Alabama program, which is the official state preliminary of the Distinguished Young Women of America scholarship program.

For more information, call Leslie Deavers at 755-8825.
