THS student receives two community awards

Lindsey Wood of Thorsby High School was recently awarded a pair of prestigious community service awards.

Wood was chosen for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award and the President’s Volunteer Service Award for her relentless efforts in the community.

She applied for the Prudential award, and through her essays she was recognized among the top 10 percent of volunteers in the program that participate in the program.

“From that, they took my [community] hours, and I got the Presidential Voluntary Service Award,” Wood said. “I had over 450 hours for foster care, and that’s what they based it on.”

As part of receiving the President’s Voluntary Service Award, Wood was sent a certificate signed by President Donald Trump.

Wood started a ministry called Bows at Bliss about four years ago.

Through the ministry, she makes hair bows that she sells to donate the money to help children in foster care in Alabama.

“I try to meet their immediate needs, such as backpacks,” Wood said.

According to Wood, her best friend was adopted through the Alabama Baptist Children’s Home.

“Just hearing all the stories from foster families and knowing that I can do something to raise money from them is something special,” Wood said.

Wood’s cousin was also adopted through another international organization.

“It’s best to make our own opportunities and give back to others that have given to us here in Thorsby,” Wood said.
