County to purchase online system for deeds

Deeds and mortgages filed in the past 30 years could soon be available online.

The Chilton County Commission at its meeting Monday approved a purchase of $52,000 for an indexing software system for the Chilton County Probate Office.

Probate Judge Bobby Martin said the system would allow the county’s deed and mortgage records to be available online.

“Once we get all the kinks out, we’ll have everything online,” Martin said. “That’s what we’re working toward.”

Martin said the company his office will work with, BIS, is based in Oklahoma but also operates out of Birmingham.

Martin said the company is eager to get started on the project because they plan to make Chilton County a model, as it will be their first install in Alabama.

Customers would be able to set up accounts and submit payments for access to deeds and mortgages through the new website, Martin said.

The change will also help Probate Office employees because less of their time would be spent helping customers with the current offline system.

In other business, the Commission:

•Granted an easement to Alabama Power to relocate a power pole back to the property line at a site off Highway 145, adjacent to the Chilton County Airport, where land was cleared.

•Extended through 2017 a contract with Southern Health Partners for inmate care at the Chilton County Jail. The rate remained the same, at $261,742 per year.

•Approved for a joint committee between the county and city of Clanton to seek bids for the clearing of trees at a planned industrial park site.

•Approved a resolution for the dissolution of the Chilton County Hospital Board. The entity has become the Health Care Authority.
