The Chilton Shelby Mental Health Center, Chilton County High School SADD chapter and Clanton Police Department have all joined together to put on a Family Fun Day at the school Saturday, April 16 from noon until 2 p.m.

This free event is the community kickoff to educate and raise awareness about the dangers of underage drinking and parents hosting parties where underage drinking is allowed.

There will be an Easter egg hunt, cupcake walk, arts and crafts, community information fair and free food. Birmingham radio station 95.7 Jamz will also be in attendance.

“We did it this way to make sure we have something for everyone,” said Zina Cartwell, Chilton Shelby Mental Health Prevention Coordinator and SADD consultant. “The Easter egg hunt is for the younger children, the radio station is for the teens and the information fair is for the adults.”

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will also have a booth set up and will provide information to parents.

“What parents do not realize is if they sponsor a party where underage drinking is involved and a minor leaves the home and gets in an accident, the parent of the party will be liable,” Cartwell said.

The goal is to reach out to the students and parents before the proms; and to make sure everyone takes something home from the actual event, she said.

The SADD organization has also partnered with Baugh Ford to raise money for the organization at the event. Participants 18 and over will have the opportunity to test drive one of the dealer’s new cars. For each car test driven, $20 will be donated to the organization.

CCHS has more than 20 student SADD members (Students Against Destructive Decisions) volunteering for the event and more than 90 active members total.

“The school is always very supportive and is always 100 percent behind all of our efforts,” said Cartwell. “I would like to thank the school’s principal, Greg DeJarnett, and the students for doing whatever they can to get the message out.”
