Commission brings architect on board for library roofing project

The Chilton County Commission agreed at a meeting Monday to hire architect Walter McKee to replace the Chilton-Clanton library roof.

When brought up by chairman Tim Mims, Commissioner Red Turnipseed made a motion to have McKee of McKee and Associates in Montgomery head the project.

“We need to do away with the buckets in the library,” said Mims.

McKee proposed four plans to the commission at a recent work session and agreed to compensation that would amount to 8 percent of the actual value of the work, Turnipseed said.

“I make a motion for the No. 2 option, which is to cover the whole roof and put a hip roof on it,” Turnipseed said. “He said it would take three to four weeks to get the drawings.”

Joe Headley seconded the motion, and it was passed by a unanimous vote.

In other business, Pastor Tony Christensen of Verbena Baptist Church addressed the commission regarding the paving of County Road 509.

Christensen said he was told in 2006 that the road leading to his church would be paved during another paving job in that area at that time, but his has yet to be paved.

Commissioner Bobby Agee as well as other commissioners said they remember voting to move forward with the project.

“There is already a resolution for it; we will get started on it this summer,” said Engineer Tony Wearren.

Also, with the county’s current liability insurance expiring Friday, the commission agreed to join the Association of County Commissions of Alabama for liability insurance.

Assistant Executive Director Sonny Brasfield proposed the ACCA Liability Self-Insurance Fund to the commission.

“This fund was established in the mid-’80s,” said Brasfield. “Out of 67 counties, 53 counties participate in this fund.”

The county will pay a prorated rate from April 15 to Jan. 1, and after that date the county will begin its three-year cycle and join with the rest of the counties.

Additionally, Minooka Park has received $10,000 more in grant money for its new septic tank project and has opened the project back up for bids, said Park Manager Gerald Arrington.

The commission unanimously appointed Attorney John Hollis Jackson III to serve on the Mental Health Board of Chilton and Shelby counties.
