Commission seeks bids to replace library roof

The Chilton County Commission voted Monday to seek bids for a new roof at the Chilton-Clanton Library.

Pete Davenport, county maintenance supervisor, and Barry Leach, technical representative for SR Products, gave recommendations on what to do with the roof.

Leach referred to the roof and gutters as being “beyond its maintenance years” with “a perimeter that is rusting and falling apart.”

The original roof that was built in the late ’60s remains on the library, and the recovery roof that was placed on 8-10 years ago is still on there, he said.

“What you have now is a roof system that cannot be repaired effectively,” said Leach.

Leach recommended removing the two bad roofs and replacing them with one good, permanent roof.

“If building long term, then think long term solutions,” said Leach.

The bids will include the costs of the roof and gutters, a process that is expected to move quickly.

In other business, bids for a new septic system at Minooka Park were let out too.

Currently, the park has a temporary 10,800-gallon holding tank that has to be pumped out three to four times a year at $1,300 – $1,500 each time.

“It’s going to cost twice as much to pump the tank out three times a year with the new campsites,” said park manager Gerald Arrington.

Bid packages are ready to be distributed and also includes phase two of the campsites.
