Mold to be removed from Jemison High School

Mold remediation will be performed at the Jemison High School eighth grade wing prior to school starting back Aug. 9.

A bid for the project in the amount of $26,500 from ARR Restoration and Remediation, based in Tuscaloosa, was approved Tuesday by the Chilton County Board of Education.

The scope of work listed in the bid includes removal and disposal of mold in 18 classrooms, a hallway, five wall hanging ACU units and one main HVAC unit.

Superintendent of Education Tommy Glasscock said the project could begin as early as next week and should take about two weeks to complete.

“Basically, they’ll just go in and clean everything really good and remove any signs of mold,” Glasscock said.

What served as the eighth grade wing during the previous school year was closed in 2010 when a new Jemison school was built to house grades 5-7.

After sitting vacant for a few years, the wing was remodeled and re-opened.

However, officials now know a new roof was needed. A leaking old roof coupled with the installation of drop ceilings allowed mold to grow, Glasscock said.

Other Maintenance Department requests approved during Tuesday’s meeting included:

•Terry Clark to be raised to the top of the Maintenance 2 pay scale, a difference of $3,847.20 yearly.

•Purchase toilet tissue and paper towels from Newell Paper Company, which submitted the lowest bid in the amount of $66,035.50.

Other school and shop requests approved included:

•School facility rental application from the town of Thorsby to hold a fireworks show at Thorsby High School on June 29 with fees waived.

•School facility rental application from the Clanton Lions Club for June 13-23 at Chilton County High School and the lunchroom application from the Clanton Lions club for June 18-23.
