Lopez, Stewart still shining

Shelby Lopez, a 2012 Jemison graduate, concluded her first collegiate season as a catcher for Central Alabama Community College (38-10, 12-4 Alabama Community College Conference) with consistency offensively and defensively.

The freshman ended with the Trojans’ fifth-highest batting average (.373) complemented with a fielding percentage of .989.

She added an on-base percentage of .447 and a slugging percentage of .537, as well as 15 runs, 14 RBI, eight doubles and one home run.

Lauren Stewart, a 2012 Chilton County High School graduate, completed her first collegiate season as an infielder for Faulkner State Community College (39-14, 4-0 ACCC) with an on-base percentage of .360 and a slugging percentage of .292.

The freshman added eight RBI, eight walks, five runs, one home run and a batting average of .220.

Davis dominates athletically, academically

Lori Davis, a 2012 Billingsley graduate, was an instrumental component of the Alabama State University track team in her first season.

The freshman led the Hornets to a fourth-consecutive victory at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship by placing runner-up in the javelin with a distance of 115 feet, 10 1/2 inches.

Davis has not only exemplified excellence athletically but was also recognized for achievements as a student.

On May 20, the ASU Athletics Department announced that she was one of 18 women’s track and field athletes that made the honor roll, which required a 3.0 or higher GPA.

Wilson wins national title, Phillips competes

Zach Wilson, a 2012 Billingsley graduate, won the Tie Down Roping title at the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association National Championships for the University of West Alabama from June 9-15.

The freshman was 10th following the first round of competition with a score of 10.0 and followed with totals of 9.3 and 9.9 in the subsequent periods, respectively.

Though his highest finish in any round was sixth among the field of 48 competitors, he had the lowest cumulative score of 38.1.

Overall, the Tigers clinched 23rd among the field of 58 teams, while Panhandle State clinched the team title.

Andrew Phillips, a 2011 Maplesville graduate, garnered 34th in the Saddle Bronc Riding event for West Alabama.
