The Dauphin Island Sea Lab offered its weeklong summer camp “Gulf Island Journey” from July 13-18, for middle school students across the country to come learn more about the marine environment by exploring life on a barrier island.

Local Jemison Middle School student Alex Moore attended the camp and came back with new knowledge, skills and friends.

Students lived on campus for the week and participated in a plethora of unique activities to encourage interest in science and enhance understanding of the marine environment.

While attending the camp, students took part in a variety of fun activities from fishing to trawling, trips to the marsh, Estuarium, Fort Gaines and Sand Island; setting up an aquarium, and growing plankton.

Now that the weeklong camp has ended, the students have returned home, but their experience at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab will be remembered and applied in their future.
