In the interest of fairness

A new state law that allows county department heads to submit their own budgets to County Commissioners could be a good thing.

Some department heads are officials that are elected at large, while others are hired by the commission. Either way, a department head is most familiar with his or her department’s needs.

The new law also gives commissioners more say in budgeting. Commissioners are now required to hold hearings with department heads, and commissioners must approve any transfers of funding between line items.

While this law is meant to keep department heads accountable, it does not remove this responsibility from our county leaders. It is up to commissioners to see that all departments are treated fairly.

Passing a budget that satisfies county department heads would be a step up from last year. While the opinions of all heads are not known, those in attendance at Monday’s meeting seemed pleased with the results.

Let’s just hope our commissioners don’t fall into the trap of trying to please everybody.
