An alert convenience store clerk in Jemison helped police nab Wednesday night a man who was caught on surveillance video robbing a Clanton convenience store last week.

Michael Christian Parker, 19, of Birmingham has been charged with first-degree robbery. He is in the Chilton County Jail on $15,000 bond.

Interim Clanton Police Chief Keith Maddox said Parker allegedly robbed Sunny Foods No. 6 at the Shell station next to McDonald’s on Nov. 11 around 10:30 p.m. The suspect was buying a soda when he apparently pulled out a semiautomatic gun and told the clerk to give him all of their money. The suspect took the whole cash drawer during the robbery.

Maddox said they had video and a good description of the suspect, and they shared the suspect’s image with surrounding law enforcement agencies.

Around 11:30 Wednesday night, a clerk at a Chevron station at the I-65 Jemison exit noticed a suspicious car parked outside the store. The clerk called the Jemison police to check out the situation.

Jemison police officer Randall Bice along with Chilton County Sheriff deputies Jimmy Johnson, Frank Davis and Matt Griffin responded to the scene to investigate. The officers noticed that the suspect fit the description of the person involved with the Clanton robbery.

After Clanton officer Duane Driver arrived on the scene with still images of the robbery video, the suspect was arrested because he matched the pictures of the suspect.

“The clerk was very attentive and expressed concern,” Maddox said. “We appreciate the help of the Jemison Police and the Sheriff’s Department.”

No one was hurt during the robbery or when the suspect was arrested.

Maddox said the video evidence was a big help in catching the suspect.

“Video technology is much better now. Many of them have switched to digital video, and that has improved the quality of the images,” Maddox said. “It has been a big help.”
