Bears pull away from Verbena for first win

Billingsley pulled away from host Verbena in the second half of Friday’s game for a 28-9 win, the first of the season for the Bears.

D.J. Dunnigan rushed 39 times for 253 yards and two touchdowns to help improve Billingsley’s record to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in region play.

Verbena, meanwhile, falls to 2-2 and 1-2.

BHS quarterback James Woods added 62 yards and two scores on 13 rushes.

Rios Ceballos was good on all four of his point-after tries.

Jeffrey Lee had three sacks to lead the Bears defense, and Issac Green had two sacks.

Verbena scored first in the game on a 31-yard pass from Tristan Short to Juwan Tyus, and Anthony Miller’s extra point made it 7-0 with 3:43 remaining in the first quarter.

Billingsley tied the score on a 10-yard run by Dunnigan with 11:41 on the clock in the second quarter and took the lead on a two-yard Dunnigan run with 9:13 to go in the third quarter.

Verbena cut the lead to 14-9 on a safety that resulted from a snap over the head of Billingsley’s punter and through the back of the end zone.
