The Jemison Public Library is holding a one-week summer reading program this week.

The program is free, and children of all ages may attend. Parents are encouraged to stay during the programs.

Librarian Tammie McGriff said each day this week will be a different theme, and representatives from local businesses in Jemison will take turns reading books to the kids each day.

“We wanted to involve the local businesses and asked them to come read,” McGriff said.

On Tuesday, kids were treated to a story read by Karen Cottingham with Alfa Insurance.

Cottingham read “The Doorbell Rang” by Pat Hutchins.

The story tells about “Ma,” who makes a batch of chocolate chip cookies and as the doorbell continues to ring, she must share the cookies with each new visitor.

After the story hour, kids were treated to chocolate chip cookies.

McGriff said kids are encouraged to check out books at the Jemison Public Library throughout the week.

On Friday, visitors from Sarrell Dental, Rex Bittle with Region’s Bank, Jake and Nicole Bearden and face painting by Madeline Swindle will be at the Jemison Municipal Auditorium to celebrate the final day of the program.

The program is from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. each day.

There is no registration required.
