The Maplesville Town Council unanimously voted in its April 13 meeting to purchase a new traffic light. 

The new light will replace the current light, which hangs at the intersection of Main Street, Alabama Highway 22 and Alabama Highway 139. It will cost an estimated $2,500 and will be installed by the state.

In other business, the council:

• Voted unanimously to approve the purchase of a new police car, a 2015 Dodge Charger.

The council had previously voted to purchase the Charger at a base price of $22,156 before being outfitted as a police car.

According to town clerk Dawn Smitherman, the options were presented to the council at the request of Mayor W.C. Hayes, with pricing for outfitting each vehicle included in order to avoid confusion.

The cost of the Charger after outfitting was $24,728, the Chevrolet Caprice was $25,557 and the Dodge truck $25,482, with the Council voting to purchase the Charger.

One of the major upgrades to the Charger was the removal of a six-cylinder engine and the installation of a eight-cylinder engine at a cost of $1,985.

Other options considered were a Chevrolet Caprice Police Pursuit Vehicle and a Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab pickup (replacing a Ford F-150, which was removed from the state bid list).

After the presentation, the Council voted to purchase the Charger.

• Voted unanimously to approve the purchase of five body cameras for the Maplesville Police Department, at a cost not available at press time.

•Approved 25-cent raises for Josh Franklin and Earl Livingston, both street department workers.

•Accepted the resignation of police officer Scott Conner, who is leaving to enter a different field. The Council also heard from Chief Todd Ingram that Ken Casey had passed a psychological exam, and will enter the police academy in May.
