Benton Ray Matthews, 77, of Clanton, passed away Oct. 16 at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster.

He was born Nov. 12, 1939, in Limestone County, the son of the late Theo Matthews and the late Delia Rogers Matthews.

He was in maintenance at Gulf States Paper.

Surviving are his wife, Willie Matthews of Clanton; daughter, Delia “DeeDee” Abernathy (Linus) Yelk of Hoover; son, Benton Kyle (Carolyn) Matthews of Clanton; grandchildren, Ethan Abernathy, ViviAnn Abernathy, Eli Abernathy; step-grandchildren, David Yelk, Aaron Yelk, Seren Yelk; step-daughter, Tina (Bobby) Martin of Clanton; step-grandchildren, Jason (Teresa) Martin, Eric (Erica West) Martin, Shane Minor, Ashley Minor; sister, Viola (David) Vaughn, Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his step-son, Marty Minor.

Friends were received from 6-8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 17 at Martin Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be held Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. at Martin Memorial Cemetery in Clanton with the Rev. Tony Smitherman officiating.
