The Maplesville Town Council voted Monday to pay off a sewer loan for $36,475.48.

Councilwoman Patty Crocker made a motion to pay off the loan, and councilman Richard Davis seconded the motion.

All council members voted in favor of paying off the loan.

Previously, the council had discussed paying off the loan—the last outstanding loan the town had—since the town’s budget would allow it, and paying off the loan would save the town from paying more interest on it.

As of Jan. 13, the balance on the loan was $36,470.72, plus $4.76 in interest per day until paid off.

After the loan payment clears, the town will be debt-free, Town Clerk Sheila Haigler said.

The only visitor on Monday’s meeting agenda was Fletcher Green, Maplesville’s new prosecutor as of Jan. 1.

The council approved Green for the position Dec. 9 following former Town Prosecutor Chris Speaks’ resignation.

“We’re proud to have him on board with us,” Mayor W.C. Hayes said of Green, who also serves as Thorsby’s prosecutor and has a private law practice in Clanton.

“I’m proud to be here, and I look forward to helping with town business,” Green said.

For the fire department, the council approved Sarah Bartz as a volunteer fire and rescue employee pending a drug test.

The council also voted to allow the Maplesville High School Athletic Club to use the fire station for its raffle drawing fundraiser dinner in March and to make a $500 donation to the department.

Member James Smith said the club needed a venue this year to hold the raffle, which is the club’s biggest annual fundraiser.

For the police department, Chief Todd Ingram said he had no personnel changes, and on the monthly statistics report, he noted the mileage on the department’s cars and the amount of overtime and part-time pay was down some from last year.
