Bingo for Books and a silent auction will be held at the Jemison Municipal Complex Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 8.

Librarian Tammie McGriff at the Jemison Public Library said the proceeds from the event will go to help provide more textbooks for the Chilton County School system as well as benefit the Jemison Public Library.

“There are some schools here in this county that don’t have enough books for the children,” McGriff said. “We had this event in the fall and had a lot of fun with it so we decided to have another one.”

McGriff said barbecue, chips and a drink will be sold for $5 and there will be prizes for the winners who play bingo.

“We will also have items from local businesses and individuals who donated for the silent auction which is something we are trying for the first time,” McGriff said.

McGriff said “cuffed for books” will also be held on Feb. 8 in an effort to raise money for the books as well.

McGriff said the “cuffed for books” event will start at 8 a.m. and last until 8 p.m. with a lot of local residents, including local officials, arrested by a Jemison police officer who will place the individuals in handcuffs and bring them to the courtroom to sit in a makeshift “jail” for 30 minutes to an hour.

The individuals will be required to come up with bail money to release them from jail and the money will be donated to the proceeds for more textbooks.

“There are some people who have been nominated to be arrested while some people won’t know they are being arrested that day,” McGriff said. “The whole thing is to raise money and have a lot of fun while doing it.”

McGriff said some individuals who will be working will be arrested during their lunch break and fed at the courthouse.

“We don’t want to take anybody away from the work they will have to get accomplished for that day so we are trying to coordinate for some of them to be arrested while they are on their lunch break.”
