Maplesville Fire Chief Michael Drewry sought and received approval from the town council Monday night to add eight radios to the department’s supply.

Drewry said the radios could be purchased for $429 each for a total of $3,432 through AllComm, or all could be purchased from a state bid for a total of $2,100.

The state bid radios would already be programmed to narrowband in compliance with a federal mandate in 2012 outlawing wideband radios.

The council voted to purchase the state bid radios for $2,100.

For the police department, the council approved a pay raise for Officer Casey O’Farril as set by the previous council for reaching his nine-month mark as a first-year full-time officer.

The council discussed the police department’s shift schedule for Chief Todd Ingram and full- and part-time officers and the amount of overtime pay the department must provide but did not take action to change the current schedule.

Maplesville currently has four full-time officers and several part-time officers. The council requested copies of the department’s schedule to study and will discuss possibly adding another officer in the future.

Street Department Superintendent Kenny Barrett asked the council to consider purchasing a utility trailer to replace the one stolen recently from the town’s lot.

Council members agreed to look for a trailer to purchase for $650 or less.

Regarding the town’s stolen generator, Barrett said, “I don’t feel it’s a necessity here at this moment.”

The council decided to call the town’s insurance company about removing or painting over graffiti on numerous surfaces at Maplesville’s ball park facilities, including the concession stand wall, restroom doors and music pavilion floor.

In other business, Barrett thanked councilmember Richard Davis for his and his neighbors’ monetary contributions and volunteer work in repairing roads.

“Everybody can come out of this good,” Davis said.
