The Panthers defeated West Blocton, 3-1 (18-25, 25-8, 25-19, 25-17), but lost to tournament host Calera in the area championship match, 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-22).

JHS will next compete in the South super regional tournament against Charles Henderson High School at 4:15 p.m. on Oct. 26 in Montgomery.

Local teams Billingsley and Maplesville both advanced out of the Class 1A, Area 5 tournament.

Billingsley's Chelsea Morris (12) and Alexis Cook celebrate winning a point.

Billingsley started the tournament, which was hosted at the school, by knocking out Ellwood Christian.

Maplesville then came from behind for a win in an epic match against Autaugaville, 3-2 (23-25, 19-25, 25-15, 25-13, 19-17), that earned the Red Devils a trip to a regional tournament.
