Green a triple threat for Bears

Playmaker: Torrey Green (shown earlier in the season against Maplesville) amassed 230 all-purpose yards in a win last week.

The term “dual threat” in football circles is used to describe a player that has the ability to change the game in more ways than one.

For example, a quarterback that can pass from the pocket as well as speed around the field, chewing up yardage with both legs and arm. Another example would be a defensive back that can tackle as well as he reads a pass play.

But what about the possibility of a triple threat player? Is it possible that a player can be a threat for the opposition in three or more ways?

Sure it is. One needs to look no further than Billingsley’s Torrey Green to prove it.

Green, The Clanton Advertiser’s Player of the Week, amassed 230 all-purpose yards on Sept. 21 in a 38-14 win against Sunshine, including 98 receiving and 60 on a kickoff returned for a touchdown.

Billingsley head coach Tyson McLean said Green, a senior, gives the Bears’ offense an extra dimension.

“It gives us a lot of options,” he said. “He makes the other team have to game plan [differently].”

Green plays in the slot receiver position, which not only allows him to be a weapon with his hands but also with his running ability. McLean said Green’s speed is often utilized by running a “speed sweep,” when he lines up as a receiver but cuts back behind the offensive line to receive a handoff, before cutting back up field for yardage.

“You have to play the whole field,” he said. “You have to play east and west as well as north and south.”

In addition to leadership on the field, McLean said Green’s senior presence is a major factor in the locker room.

“He leads by example,” he said. “He’s an all-around leader and a good kid. I wish we could keep him around a couple more years.”
