Two local teams advance in basketball playoffs

Isabella’s boys and Thorsby’s girls on Monday advanced in their respective basketball area tournaments, while four local teams had their seasons end.

The Mustangs defeated Billingsley, 50-47, in the first round of the Class 2A, Area 7 tournament.

IHS advances to play tournament host Francis Marion at 8 p.m. on Thursday.

The Thorsby girls, playing in the Class 2A, Area 7 tournament at Francis Marion High School, defeated Billingsley, 54-42.

The Rebels led by nine points at the end of the first period, 17-6, and at halftime, 25-16, but blew the game open in the third, taking a 44-25 lead.

Sharonda Cooper led THS with a game-high 30 points, and teammate Amanda Hubbard added 16 points.

Madison Price led BHS with 15 points, all of which came on 3-pointers.

Thorsby advances to play tournament host Francis Marion at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

The other two losses by local teams came in heartbreaking fashion.

Maplesville’s girls lost to Autaugaville, 45-43, in the Class 1A, Area 5 tournament at Akron High School.

Verbena’s girls lost to Loachapoka, 26-24, in the first round of the Class 1A, Area 6 tournament hosted by Edward Bell High School.

The loss came despite a double-double by Red Devil Marqueska Deramus. She had 15 points and 17 rebounds.

Teammate Lacey Short recorded four points, and Hope Driver had three points.
