A man was airlifted to UAB Hospital after running off Interstate 65 Tuesday morning.

Verbena and Clanton fire departments responded to the wreck near the 204-mile marker northbound about 5:30 a.m. The driver had apparently run off the road and into a wooded area, and was ejected from his vehicle.

“He didn’t appear to have life-threatening injuries, but the injuries were very serious,” Clanton Fire Chief David Driver said.

Driver said the wreck occurred some time before emergency responders arrived. Passing motorists apparently didn’t see the man because the wreck was before daylight and his distance from the road.

Both northbound lanes of I-65 were closed for 20-30 minutes while a rescue helicopter landed and took the man to UAB.
